This time of year most news outlets review the year's accumulation of celebrity deaths. Pages of obituaries and appreciations sprout up in magazines from Time to People. This year we lost Billy Wilder, Dee Dee, Joe Strummer, and Richard Harris. But you could read every single one of those magazines and you'd never see mention of Dave Karcich.
Dave played in Spring Heeled Jack, a band that (together with J C Superska) founded the Connecticut ska scene. For many people, SHJ was their first show. SHJ ruled the Tune Inn, packing in kids to dance and jump in 100 degree steam baths. They were mobbed by fans, some of whom had extremely poor social skills. Where J C Superska prided themselves on being assholes (and I mean that with the love and respect only an asshole can have), SHJ we always gregarious and genuinely friendly. Dave was the nicest guy in a band of nice guys. SHJ finally called it a day, and the guys went off to bands like the Lost City Angels, The Bosstones, Real Big Fish, and Less Than Jake. Dave went on to play in The Pilfers with Coolie Ranx. After the Pilfers, he played with Boston's Avoid One Thing. On April 5th, Dave died of a brain anurysm. His freinds, family, and fans were all shocked and devistated. Last Sunday, a tribute to Dave was held here in New Haven. Besides the Lost City Angels Beer Scouts, Cenzo, and Big Mistake, Dave's old bands reunited to play one last time. People I haven't seen in eight years were there and it was like a wake and a high school reunion combined. I don't know if the soul survives after the bodydies but ,in that packed club, Dave Karcich's spirt was very much alive
